Registration in Full Swing for AMSA's Upcoming 2009 Annual Conference
Record Number of Propoals Were Submitted by Scholars from around the Globe

 

With the deadline past for submissions for the
17th Annual Conference on Men and Masculinities scheduled for April 3-5, 2009 in Montréal, the American Men's Studies Association's Annual Conference Director, Don Levy reports that a record number of proposals have been received from US, Canadian, European, Asian, Latin American, and African scholars and practitioners.

The 2009 Conference theme is: Beyond Borders: Masculinities and Margins. Events will be held at McGill and Concordia Universities in downtown Montreal.The conference will feature additional plenary addresses, pre-conference men’s studies workshops, and presentations by almost 100 international scholars, practitioners and activists. AMSA’s annual conference continues to be the largest annual men's studies conference in the UnitedStates, drawing an international group of participants representing a broad range of academic disciplines and interests.  An open and affirming event featuringscholarship and respectful dialogue on the critical study of men and masculinities, anyone with an interest in this emerging field of study is welcome to participate.

2009 Conference Keynote Speaker to Be Victor J. Seidler

 

Old MontrealNoted Social Theorist and Author Victor Seidler will join us in Montréal and deliver the 2009 Conference keynote address. Sideler is Professor of Sociology at Goldsmith's College of the University of London. His numerous publications include the following books:

 

Transforming Masculinities (2006); Young Men and Masculinities: Global Cultures and Intimate Lives (2006); Man Enough: Embodying Masculinities (1997); Unreasonable Men: Masculinity and Social Theory (1994); Men, Sex and Relationships (1992); The Achilles Heel Reader: Men, Sexual Politics and Socialism (1991); Rediscovering Masculinity (1989)

 


 

Masculinités et sociétés Partners with AMSA for the 2009 Conference

 

Masculinités et sociétés, from Université Laval and Université de Montréal, has generously awarded AMSA approximately $2,000 (Canadian) for expenses related to 2009 conference keynote speakers.

 

Masculinités et sociétés is a funded research group affiliated with Université Laval (Quebec City) and Université de Montréal. It is engaged in a research program evaluating the adequacy of social services provided to men in crisis in Quebec.  M&S’s activities include organizing academic conferences or colloquiums and taking part in other academic events related to its purposes. M&S’s wishes to expand its network beyond Quebec and Europe and is excited to support the 2009 AMSA conference as part of its effort to enter into new collaborations with scholars and practitioners.

 

Masculinités et sociétés is directed by Dr. Jocelyn Lindsay, Professor and Head, School of Social Work, Université Laval.


Deadline is January 3 for Applications for AMSA's 2009 Loren Frankel Scholarship

 

January 3, 2009 is the deadline for students who will present at AMSA's 2009 Annual Conference in Montreal to apply for 2009 Loren Frankel Scholarships. One or more scholarships of up to $500 are currently available to students whose papers are accepted and who will attend to present them at the Conference.

 

The 2008 Loren Frankel Scholarship was awarded to Chien-Chen Kung at the annual banquet of its 2008 Annual Conference at Wake Forest University on April 4th. Kung is a doctoral student in the Educational Leadership and Policy Department at the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York. He is in the Social and studentsPhilosophical Foundations Program with a concentration in the Sociology of Education. His paper was titled: "Masculinities and leisure: The middle age men's carculture of American white working class.
