The Academia Mexicana de Estudios de Género de los Hombres (The Mexican Academy for the Study of the Man and Gender -AMEGH) announces its Sixth Congress with the theme: “Man and Politics of Violence, An Historical Rehearsal, A Contemporary Problem of Global Concern,” which will be held from the 22nd to the 26th of October 2012 in the Colegio de la Frontera Norte, in Cd. Juarez, Chih. Mexico.
During the last decades Mexico has experienced very high levels of violent activity. The population lives in a permanent state of terror, paralysis, concern, and indignation. A big sector of the population is demanding to stop the damages and consequences that violence is generating among all social, economic, and cultural levels.
Current social and political policy on violence, from the conservative government and the groups of organized crime, has generated a scenario of confrontation between Government and Crime. This recurrent violent scenario has brought also to light, among others, a high level of governmental corruption, protectionist schemes to organized crime from the police and other law enforcement agencies, the severe infiltration of organized crime in public institutions, and the impact crime has over the economy because of the level of money involved. These facts suggest the existence of important links between political and financial sectors and organized crime that has favored the establishment and normalization of violence in detriment of the quality of life of the Mexican population.
Because of the above, the organizing committee of the VI Congress of the Mexican Academy for the Study of the Man Gender is proposing, as a central theme for this year’s congress, the issue of Violence, with emphasis on an analysis of masculinity, by which power networks are configured among the state’s economic and political elites and which results are reflected in the establishment of policies of violence.
In the same manner, is important to continue with a critical review of the topics and problems being studied for more than a decade about the generic condition of man; violence towards women, Homophobia, the programs for the attention of man who practice violence, the implementation of campaigns, programs, training workshops from civil and public institutions about the prevention, attention, and eradication of violence of gender; the experience of paternity; the practices and conceptions about sexuality; the participation of man in reproductive sexual health; migration; recreational, artistic, and ritual practices; social involvement; and finally, the analysis and proposals on public policy, by and for men, that help to break the behavioral chain of violence, oppression, and domination.
The main objective of the current congress will be to discuss and analyze the problems stated above and to propose actions and answers for the short, median and long terms.
Opening Masterly Lecture will be presented by Raewyn Connell
